 | Donations... Thank you! | 26 Feb 2008 | Firstly, a big big THANK YOU to everyone who donated clothes, shoes, toys, glasses and footballs to us, these arrived at the beginning of February and we’ve slowly been distributing them to artist’s families all over the country. I’ve attached some pictures of a few artists… perhaps you recognise your items?!! The footballs made all the children really happy, we made sure they were given to children who play football a lot with the rest of the neighbourhood, so all the children will enjoy. Thank you so much.

Our beautiful sculpture which we were so proud of showing off in our last newsletter was sadly vandalised, and broke in two. Efforts to repair her proved in vain and she is now being amputated, in the hope that she will have a new life.
This years shows are slowly being confirmed, we’re very excited about all the new venues. We can’t wait to share them with you once they’re all confirmed.
Our collection is beautiful. With hardly any buyers at the present political climate here, the artists are producing exceptional quality work and it is going to be an honour to present them at our shows.
Everything as usual (in different ways) has been hard to find here in Zimbabwe, we’re struggling to find materials. Planks for our crates, packaging material, nails, all is taking a lot longer than usual, but we’re ever hopeful everything will be ready in time to be shipped mid March to arrive in time for our first show in May.
Do keep intouch with us, suggest any comments you may have or just say hello!

 | Seasons Greetings... | 29 Dec 2007 | Greetings to you all...
Hoping you had a great Christmas!
The New Year is just about to arrive and on behalf of all the sculptors in Zimbabwe, Zimsculpt would like to thank you for all your support in 2007.
We have just acquired the most beautiful sculpture we have ever collected, by a little known artist by the name of Shingarai Dare. We're really excited about it and extremely proud to show it off. The piece is HUGE, standing at nearly 3.5 metres high. Obviously, not everyone is in the market to buy such a large sculpture, but we wanted to give you all a preview before we sell it or tour with it!

This is what Zimbabwean sculptors are capable of! It's just amazing, we hope you agree.
If there is anything we can help you with, if you finding that 'special' gift for a friend, please let us help you. More than ever Zimbabwe needs your support.
With our deepest and fondest thoughts.

 | 2007 Chelsea Flower Show | 17 Jun 2007 | Typically the weather has been pretty bad during Chelsea for the past 3 years, but this year the weather was great during the show. However setting up and breaking down after was not so fun - in rain and wind. But after all our hard work putting our Zimbabwean garden together it was well worth the effort. We won a Commendation for our stand, which is the highest accolade in our category.

Her Majesty The Queen and entourage walked past our stand. We mingled with celebrities and royalty on Press Day and enjoyed the usual atmosphere Chelsea Flower Show creates.
A big thank you to all of you who supported us, it's nice to see old faces and friends. Without you we would not be where we are today.

So thanks again and come see us at Wimbledon Cannizaro Park now!
Best wishes
Vivienne

 | Zimsculpt Itinerary 2007 | 02 May 2007 | Dear Friends & Supporters
Well it's high time I filled you in with some of our latest news from Zimbabwe and our upcoming itinerary this year.
We've just returned from inaugurating a two-week exhibition in Bahrain, where we were part of the 'Spring Culture Week'. It was our third year in Bahrain and as usual the exhibition was a great success - thank you to everyone who welcomed us all, including all the local and visiting artists involved in the International Sculpture Symposium.

Moving on to our next show Chelsea Flower Show, and our UK tour, where we will only be at Chelsea and Wimbledon. We are sad not to be at Loseley again this year, but after three consecutive years, it is time we went to pastures new. We are also pleased to announce our invitation to the Royal Botanical Gardens of Burlington, Ontario (Toronto) for our second year.
Our itinerary is as follows;
Albareh Art Gallery, Adliyah, Bahrain 20-25 March
Chelsea Flower Show, Stand No. RS7, London - 22-26 May www.rhs.org.uk
Cannizaro Park, Wimbledon, London - 9 June-8 July MON-FRI 11-7.30PM - SAT/SUN 9-7.30 Free Admission www.merton.gov.uk/arts
Royal Botanical Gardens, Burlington, Toronto, Canada 1 September - 9 October Daily 10am to dusk www.rbg.ca
Artists on tour with us this year are Lincon Muteta (of course!), Passmore Mupindiko (for the 2nd year) and for the first time leaving Zimbabwe, Vimbai Mashaya.
So, without rambling on too much, we hope to see you very soon at one of our shows where you will receive a very warm welcome.
With our very best wishes (still from Zimbabwe!)

 | Showcasing (The Late) Nicholas Mukomberanwa's work | 28 Feb 2007 | Nicholas Mukomberanwa passed away back in 2002 but was one of Zimbabwe's most creative, innovative and spiritual artists the first generation had.

His childhood was spent in a rural environment which was fundamentally to influence his later life and work.
It was at the Serima Mission school where he was introduced to the discipline of wood-carving as well as the images of formal worship (Christian) and those of traditional African art.
While still working in full-time employment (as a policeman) Nicholas began to carve. He had now found his natural area of expression and his work was soon included in important exhibitions internationally - to considerable acclaim.
Rather than allowing this early success to influence his development, Nicholas remained aloof. A constant searching for new forms of description has resulted in some quite fundamental changes in direction within the work. In the very beginning his portrayal of West African images as well as scenes from the Bible were rounded and very simple. Work from the Sixties shows a much more stylised, patterned use of geometric as well as clear, curvaceous forms. During the Seventies, using the hard, black Penhalonga Serpentine, the work became characterised by the confident use of sharp lines and planes, and of ambitiously abstracted form.
Some of his most powerful sculpture was made in the Eighties and seem to combine elements of earlier discovery - nothing is wasted. Sharp lines and hard planes are used with confidence alongside sweeping curves and deeply etched surfaces. The aspect that so distinguishes this period of work is an absence of doubt and a conviction that can only come from genuine investigation and a courageous search, both of the internal spirit and of the natural physical world. He was both knowledgeable and proud of the Shona culture - it provides powerful motivation for his work and seems to demand that he strive towards the preservation as well as the portrayal of it in his sculpture.
Nicholas is considered to be one of Zimbabwe's most gifted and successful sculptors and is highly regarded internationally. His work can now be seen in the permanent collections of many international museums.

 | Showcasing 1st Generation Sculptors | 12 Feb 2007 | Dear Friends
Apologies for sending out a blank email at the end of January with no new pieces added to the site...
With the rainy season now upon us in Zimbabwe, our computer blew up in a thunder storm and we'd been out of action for nearly two weeks. Of course, we lost everything in the process...
We've taken the unusal step to send out a mid month correspondence as we've been given the rare opportunity to showcase some 1st Generation sculptors works such as;
Benard Matemera Nicholas Mukomberanwa

Boira Mteki Henry Munyaradzi

John Takawira

Joseph Ndandarika
These have been given to us by galleries and art dealers here in Harare and we're pleased to have each one certified and authenticated. These will be sold with the sculptures.
If you don't know anything about the 1st Generation this is a good opportunity to familiarise yourself with some examples of their works. These are the forefathers of the Zimbabwean sculpture movement and are serious collectors pieces.
If you require any further details, please let me know and I'll be happy to get back to you.

 | Christmas - the time to give... | 30 Dec 2006 | Christmas - the time to give 'time, support and aid'!!
On the 14th December I visited the Hatcliffe Extension, on the outskirts of Harare to distribute children\'s and babies’ clothes and toys, which were so kindly donated by many of you this year at our exhibitions.
People living in this area (over 12,000) were affected by problems in Zimbabwe over the past year and are living in temporary structures made from wood and plastic sheeting. I met many HIV sick and malnutrioned children and adults.
Money from our Donation Box at our exhibitions helped to ship the clothes here. With help from the charity Inter-Country People\'s Aid (IPA) we managed to clear the clothes through customs. Every year we donate 5% to IPA from sales from our website. We went together as they work regularly on distribution programmes with this community.
Unfortunately I was not authorised to take photographs to show you the distribution of the items, as I\'m sure it would give you great pleasure to recognise the items you donated and know that it has gone to the right people.
The children\'s toys were split into 3 groups and given to children\'s crèche’s in this area, so a larger proportion of children can play with all of them. I hope to gain photographs of these at least through IPA.
Lines of children of all ages, mothers with babies and pregnant women were each given clothes.
It was a humbling experience and one which I would like assist more in. If you are interested in assisting, we mainly need funding towards shipping costs, as we regularly receive donated items. Please do get in touch.
A few days before Christmas day I visited the rural areas to distribute the adults clothing... these were also greatly appreciated. Unfortunately that day, after leaving at 6am in the morning (for a three hour drive) I forgot my camera!!! So I have absolutely nothing to show you... I only hope you have a good imagination! These clothes went to many families living around Mudindo, Raffingora and Guruve.
I hope you and your families had a lovely Christmas and that the New Year will be a good one for you all.... I look forward to hearing from you.
With very best wishes

 | Christmas is almost upon us... | 30 Nov 2006 | Dear Friends
Gosh, it's now December... eek. Time flies.
We've all been back in sunny Zimbabwe now for a month and it's really good to be back!
We've been catching up with all the artists and telling them who brought their pieces and where they've ended up round the world. Please send us your pictures of the sculpture in situ and if you're not shy, you next to it! We can't travel with all the artists every year, so they find pictures really interesting - to know where their sculpture is and with whom. Address provided on request.
We've started buying again and have a really exciting itinerary lined up for next year, details of which are still being finalised. Watch this space!
On a different note, we have started supporting artists with HIV/AIDS and would like to know if anyone is interested in sponsoring their medication? We have found a small personal website which will give you feedback on the artist/patient, for no less than $30 a month. Please, if you are interested, let us know and we'll give you more details. You'll not only help the artist keep alive of course, but also their family and beloved artwork!
Christmas time is nearly upon us, so please take time to look at our website. With no broadband here in Zim, we find it really difficult to load up all our latest pictures, so please keep checking!
With my very best regards to you all... Vivienne

 | Final Message from our world-wide tour... | 30 Sep 2006 | Dear Friends
A big thank you to everyone that has joined our mailing list in Canada and who visited us at the Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) in Burlington (Toronto) Ontario.
The show at the RBG was a great success, with over 6000 admirers visiting us during September alone. We gave talks to local schools and tourist boards, giving demonstrations and insights into the wonders Zimbabwe offers.
We had visitors from the U.S., all over Canada and Europe. A suprise visit was made by the famous conservationist/primatologist Jane Goodall, who we had the pleasure of meeting. Please view our 'links' page for web details on The Jane Goodall Institute.
Supported by the Afro Canadian Carribean Association, we had great support from the local Afro-Carribean community, who we'd like to thank. Amongst other help, they supplied us with some fine entertainment every weekend. One of which was the great Zimbabwean dancing group 'Kholisa', meaning 'Joy' in Ndebele.
So, with sadness, it is the end of another year of our world-wide tour. We thank you for being patrons, supporters and friends and look forward to seeing your friendly faces again next year.
With very best wishes Vivienne

 | Chelsea Flower Show | 30 May 2006 | Chelsea Flower Show 2006 was a great success for us...
We were awarded a Certificate Of Merit by the RHS for the oustanding presentation of our stand. Pictures of the stand and ourselves with the award can be seen below.
The theme of our garden was 'Journey From The Depths Of Zimbabwe' - the amazing journey sculpture goes through, to get to where it is today...
Half a Zimbabwean garden and half an English garden. The Zimbabwean garden; thatched Rondaval, red soil, maize and sunflowers and the English garden; old shed, green grass and country garden flowers. The sight was delightful and visitors swarmed the stand.
Brian Watyoka was our artist in residence for the week, starting to sculpt a 3 metre high raw piece of stone within the Zimbabwean garden. On the last day he had completed enough so visitors could tell that it was a female form. Watch this space to see the finished sculpture!
The stand took us one week to erect and two days to pull down!
Sunflowers from the garden call still be purchased and are made from metal.
Next stop is our Wimbledon exhibition at the Italian Garden of Cannizaro Park... starting on 10th June. Hope to see you there...

 | Christmas - A time for giving... | 23 Dec 2005 | Dear Friends and Supporters...
We hope you are all having a lovely Christmas and New Year.
We wanted to write briefly and shed some festive cheer, to let you know what we've been doing with either the money and/or the clothes and toys that we received as donations - during our tour of London this Summer.
Visiting the length and breadth of the country in the past two weeks with 18 boxes of donated goodies has been excellent fun and extremely rewarding.
We wanted to share the pictures of joy with you... everyone was told to hold up their donations!!
As I've taken most of them, I'm not in them - but believe me I was there! Only one when we visited an orphanage with a box of toys more suitable for groups of children (I'm standing far left if you don't remember me!).
So an extremley BIG thank you to all of you from the families and children in Zimbabwe, you really made a happy Christmas.
Monies collected in our donation box went towards shipping everything out here. I would also like to sincerely thank Elite Forwarders (UK) who made it possible for all of the goodies to arrive before Christmas time and the charity organisation we support here in Zimbabwe, IPA (more info on our Charity page) - who helped us with all the paperwork... ;-)
With love and good wishes this Christmas and for the New Year...

 | Art Review by Michael Shepherd (Sunday Telegraph) | 21 Jul 2005 | Do you wonder if art ‘is for you’ ? Or do you wish that you could give something positive from your heart to Zimbabwe? Or are you a connoisseur and collector of very fine art ? Then go and visit the touring exhibition of sculpture from Zimbabwe, which has had less publicity and visits — unsurprisingly — in Wimbledon Fortnight, when it was at Canizzaro Park in Wimbledon; but which is subsequently on a tour of Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, Ingatestone Hall, and Loseley Park, this summer. And since African art is family-oriented — take the family, and especially your children !
When as an art journalist many years ago, I first saw stone sculpture from Zimbabwe, I simply could not believe that its quality was not a brilliant ‘lift’ from the work of Brancusi, Modigliani, Picasso and others. Then I investigated further and found that after 500 years of lost tradition, carving the stone of Zimbabwe — a country with a wider variety of hard stone of several colours than anywhere else — had begun again, and was already of world class. And now today a younger generation has taken up this demanding, patient art of carving hard stone (with hand tools . . . ) and brought new imagination to this. From a magnificently proud — and superbly carved — ‘Beauty Queen’ to caring mothers and their sleepy, secure babies, to the spirits that look over Africa, its people, its animals, its trees and birds and vegetation, this is world-class sculpture — but even more than that, it is art from the heart that touches the heart. And the finely prepared book that accompanies the exhibition is an enchanting glimpse into the hard work and humanity that lies behind the creation of this work.
I have praised Zimbabwean stone sculpture in the media for many years now, and known it to touch many hearts. I am very happy that I need not take back a single word of that praise. And even happier, that this sculpture has been taken up by the younger generation and has flowered beyond all expectation. Go and give it your support. It is phenomenal — a glimpse of what Africa has to offer the world in this century, which seems to have started so terribly. |

LAUNCHED by Councillor Judy Saunders, Mayor of Merton

With over 100 sculptures on display, I'm sure you will be intrigued and enlightened with the depth of the work on display...
Zimsculpt.com is a non-political company based in Harare, Zimbabwe. We receive absolutely no public funding whatsever and are completely independent.
Zimsculpt represents over 100 sculptors from across the country and spends 6 months of the year collecting the work which will be on display.
The artists, whose work is represented at the exhibition, are trying to make an honest, decent living by raising their families using their own fair hands. The exuberance of the work, the vast varieties of stone, and the great skill and imagination of the sculptors has led to many years of major exhibitions worldwide.
Zimsculpt have a unique opportunity to be in constant communication with the artists and thus privy to the latest cutting edge sculpture being produced in Zimbabwe today.
As you are probably aware, Zimbabwe is going through economical turmoil at the moment. More than ever we ask you to support our venture and take a look at this exhibition with an open heart. They are the voice of Africa and of Zimbabwe.
We don’t charge entrance fees for this exhibition, but hope that something, no matter how small, will interest the visitor.
The three sculptors especially invited from Zimbabwe to demonstrate and hold workshops are Sam Mabeu, Lincon Muteta and Dudzai Mushawepwere.

 | Chelsea Flower Show | 24 May 2005 | Chelsea Flower Show was a first for us this year and what a response we had!
Apart from the 'London Plane's trees which emitted terrible pollen for us all to endure, sniffling and coughing all over our potential customers (not good!) we managed to sell-out.
The itinerary was gruelling, with a 14 hour day, we had to remain cheerful and happy to all our customers... which I think we managed to do, with 3 hour 'nap' breaks en rota!
Thank you to all those who purchased - we very much look forward to seeing you next year and more than ever, really appreciate your support.
Please see our 'Itinerary 2005' news item for our full UK schedule this year.

 | The Standard News Report on the book launch | 09 Jan 2005 | http://www.thestandard.co.zw/read.php?path=./news/2005/January/Sunday9/&st_id=1429
Look differently, it's more than just a stone By Fanuel Jongwe ZIMBABWEAN stone sculptures is ubiquitous. One will find a piece perched on a pedestal in a gallery in Auckland, New Zealand, or one perched in a back garden in Seoul, South Korea, on a stoep in Durban or gracing the display cabinet of a celebrity in the United States.
Despite the global popularity of the stone sculpture, there is a dearth of literature detailing the "metamorphosis" of the Zimbabwean stone sculpture from its raw form when it is extracted from the mines up to the time it becomes a finished work of art.
Art critic Caro Williams' book Journey From the Depth of Zimbabwe published last month by the Harare-based Zimsculpt, comes handy by chronicling the process the stone goes through before it ends up in a gallery, living room or verandah.
The book is based on interviews with various sculptors including Lincon Muteta and Dudzai Mushawepwere who describe the painstaking journey that begins with the artists extracting stones from the mines in Guruve, Nyanga, Domboshava, Concession, Kwekwe, Masvingo and Mutoko.
The next stage is the selection of the most suitable stone from the heap of cobalt, opal, serpentine, lapideolite, verdite and springstone then the transportation, artistic creation, exhibition and appreciation.
"Nearly all of the work is done manually," sculptor Muteta said in an interview with StandardPlus. "From digging up the stones, separating workable pieces and loading the stones onto trucks. No machinery is used in all that and there is an ever-present risk of getting injured in the process."
Zimsculpt director Vivienne Prince said at the launch of the book: "The book is not a guide to Zimbabwe, or a collection of biographies or an academic review. These books have already been written. With this book, Zimsculpt asks you to look differently at the stone."
Vivid black and white photographs by Athol Rheeder complement the text.
Prince who is originally from the UK, fell in love with Zimbabwean sculpture when she saw some artefacts by Zimbabwean sculptors on display in the UK five years ago. She came to Harare in 1998 and since then has been promoting local sculpture at small charitable shows in the United States, gallery exhibitions in the Middle East and major park shows in the UK. |
 | Book Launch | 10 Dec 2004 | The official launch of the Zimsculpt book 'Journey From The Depths Of Zimbabwe' was opened by the British Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Dr Rod Pullen at the Richard Rennie Gallery in Harare, Zimbabwe on 10th December 2004.
Artists featured in the book were also present for interviews and discussion.
'Journey From The Depths Of Zimbabwe' is a unique and refreshing view of the journey a stone sculpture goes through, from birth at the mines, artistic creation, transportation to an exhibition and finally to the buyers home.
A beautifully designed gift or coffee table book, frankly written by Carol Williams (author of Love and Life, UNDP) and powerfully photographed by Athol Rheeder, our resident photographer from the UK.
The book is not a guide to Zimbabwe, a collection of biographies or an academic review. Those books have already been written. Zimsculpt asks you to look differently at the stone sculpture.
"Do not be schooled. Be passionate."

 | Obituary | 24 Nov 2004 | It's a strange title to have on a e-commerce sculpture site isn't it?
I don't think Africa or our country, Zimbabwe can escape from the mortality the HIV/AIDS pandemic is having on most people on a day to day basis.
No one is spared. It also effects many of the artists we work with in many different ways, whether caring for relations (many of those children), friends or neighbours and if 'unlucky' maybe one day themselves.
Its a shocking and extremely saddening situation for the average Zimbabwean today. Most young people are terrified to get into relationships.
The situation cannot be swept under the carpet and NOT discussed out loud.
Many artists tend to depict their fears and experiences through their works and I often find a mixed response when exhibiting these sculptures titled 'AIDS VIRUS' or 'MY HIV FRIEND'. Some people find them completely offensive and often show emotional disgust. One little girl, once asked me if she would catch AIDS if she touched the sculpture, her grandfather soon corrected her. Although she was little, children often speak out what adults often think!
I hope you're still reading... many artists have passed away through this illness, with them goes their skills and their renowned artistic style, not to mention of course that they were our dear friends and they are sadly missed by everyone.
I don't want to list all the artists that have died through this illness as it wouldn't be respectful. Therefore please just take a second to comprehend the above and look at these amazing sculptures in a new light...

Sculptors Sam Mabeu, Jonathan Mhondorohuma and Lincon Muteta were orchestrating a workshop where people could see the artists working as they would be back in Zimbabwe and grasp the amount of work it takes to sculpt each piece by hand.
